Conan O’Brien had a segment on his late night show called “Clueless Gamer”. As the title suggested, this was a segment where Conan’s guests would play a video game together and typically the guest and Conan had no experience or extremely little experience playing video games.
This Blog series is somewhat in jest because I am not completely clueless however, I would never claim to be a master in this field. The intention of this blog is to shed light on subjects that beginners and hobbyists may learn from. Hopefully providing some relatable experiences in learning about this subject and providing reviews of subject matters (Assets, Software, Hardware) for improving ones own personal/passion projects.
My background was in Theater and Art; not game design, not programming and certainly not anything related to music or any other game related field of study. Now, I have several friends and family members involved in the Gaming industry (hence the reason I thought I may be able to get involved) and they are very talented in their specializations; and great sounding boards to bounce ideas off of. Though, one dear friend sent me a “7 Day Challenge” to make a simple video game in a single week with no prior experience (I still curse him for sending me down this rabbit hole). This seemed too good to be true (and in some ways it was) but I figured “What have I got to lose?”. THIS is the start of the past several years of the true joy (and pains) of working in the Indie Game Industry.
I hope this helps someone one on their own journey and, more importantly shows that you do not need a background in the field to accomplish those dreams. If I can make a game (and I’ve made several small games thus far) than literally ANYONE can make a video game.
Good Luck out there, I hope this finds you well and most importantly, enjoy the journey!
